一番最初に遡ると、田舎で『ポパイ』を読んでいたことが大きいですね。当時の『ポパイ』で、スタイリストの北村勝彦さんのスタイリングで度々うち（吉田カバン）のカバンが使われていたのを見たんですよ。それが1980年前後ですね。
そうですね。本当に田舎の少年だったから、アルバイトしてお金貯めて、東京に洋服を買い出しに行くわけですよ。買い物のコースで言うと、まずは心臓バクバクさせて竹下通りを突入して。フェイクαで“高くて買えねぇー！”と思い、結局買うのは赤富士とかでした。赤富士はミリタリーものとかが強かったですし、自分がモッズを少しかじっていた時期もあったので、コンポラスーツやモッズコートを買いましたね。あとはシカゴ本店でデニム、シューズ関係をビームス、そこから渋谷に向かってミウラ＆サンズ。あとはハリウッド・ランチ・マーケット。うち(吉田カバン)のバッグを一番最初に買ったのは高校を出た頃だと思うけど、タンカーのシリーズのものをランチで買ったんですよ。タンカーが発売され始めたのが1983年ぐらいだから、ちょうどその頃です。当時、接客してくれたのは川越さんでした。しかもビームスでは栗野(宏文)さん、チューブは斉藤(久夫)さんでしたね。斉藤さんは確か最初行った時に商品を売ってくれなかったです(笑)。「君はまだ早いよ」とか言われて。お店なのに売らないっていうパターンもあるんだってその時思いました(笑)。栗野さんはこの仕事を始めてから話した時に、当時の自分のことを覚えてくれていましたね。ビームスではたくさん買い物しましたから。ダンガリーシャツとかアーガイルニット、レジメンタルタイとか。とにかくファッションが好きだったけど、その頃は吉田カバンに就職しようなんて思っていなかったです。
『ポパイ』のNY特集か何かの号に、吉田カバンがNYデザイナーズコレクティブという現地のエキシビションに日本のブランドで初めて参加したっていう記事が書いてあって。下町のカバン屋さんなのに、海外で出展したり、ランチとかビームスみたいな洒落たショップにも商品が並んでいるし、面白い会社だなと思っていたんですよ。それで、ファッションの勉強がしたいと思い始めて、学校を調べていたらチューブの斎藤さんが代々木にあったメンズファッション専門学校を卒業していて、そこに入学しました。そこで(ファッションディレクターの)内藤昌也に会ったんですよ。彼は当時、リーバイスの517にレッドウィングのエンジニアはいて、Tシャツにパーカっていう、のちの渋カジのスタイルを既に地でいっていました。『ポパイ』のモデルもやっていたし、ある意味で自分にとっての東京のストリートの先生は内藤ですね（笑）。
そんな内藤の繋がりで、ファイアー通りのカフェに行くと、地元の渋谷っ子たちが溜まってるわけですよ。青学とか慶応とかセントメリーに通っている人たちで、みんな余裕みたいなものがあってファッションも力が抜けているんですよ。その中、自分だけが赤富士で買ったヴィンテージのネクタイをパナマハットに巻いたりして、創意工夫のファッションで一生懸命で。彼らに「長谷川くん、なんで帽子にそんなの巻いているの？ どうかしたの？」とか言われて(苦笑)。そういう環境にいたこともファッションの勉強になったと思います。
Looking back the beginning, I had read “POPEYE” magazine when I lived in countryside. That was important for me. At that time, Katsuhiko Kitamura (fashion stylist) had often used bags of “YOSHIDA KABAN” for styling on the magazine and I had seen it. That was about 1980’s.
Right. I was country-boy, really. I did part-time job to save my money and go to Tokyo to buy clothes.
I remember that I went through “TAKESHITA STREET” with feeling my heartbeat. I had the routine shopping course. First store was “Fake α” but I couldn’t buy anything, it was too expensive for me.
Eventually, I could buy clothes at the next store “AKAFUJI” and others.
“AKAFUJI” had a lot of military items, and then, I was interested in MODS style at that time. So I bought CONPRA suit and MODS coat at the store.
And I bought denim at the “CHICAGO” main store, shoes at the “BEAMS”. After that, I went to the “MIURA&SONS” and the “HOLLYWOOD RANCH MARKET” in Shibuya.
When I was high school student, I bought our product bag of TANKER series (YOSHODA KABAN) for the first time at the HOLLYWOOD RANCH MARKET. It must be in 1983, because the series had introduced in that year.
By the time, Mr. Kawagoe helped me at HOLLYWOOD RANCH MARKET, Mr.
Kurino helped me at BEAMS, and Mr. Saito helped me at TUBE.
If I remember correctly, when I visited the store first time, Mr.Saito didn’t sell me anything at all. He had just said to me, “It’s too young to have it.” I wondered there is the situation that the store staff doesn’t sell merchandise to a customer.
Mr. Kurino remembered me of that time when I spoke with him after I started this job. Because I shopped a lot at BEAMS.
I liked fashion a lot, such as dungaree shirt, argyle knit and regimental tie. Anyway, I didn't think that I found employment at YOSHIDA KABAN in those days at all.
I read the article of NEW YORK story in POPEYE magazine that said YOSHIDA KABAN participated in local fashion exhibition called “NY Designer collective” for the first time by the brand of Japan.
They exhibited in foreign countries, and sold their products in popular stores like BEAMS and HRM, even though they are a bag company from downtown Tokyo. I thought they are quite interesting company.
I began to want to study of the fashion, and I researched for a men’s fashion school. And then, I entered the school that Mr.Saito had graduated in Yoyogi, Tokyo.
At the school, I met Masaya Naito who is fashion director now. And he was like my teacher of street in Tokyo. He wore Red Wing's engineer boots, Levi's 517 denim, white T-Shirt and the parka. Before the SHIBUKAJI (Shibuya casual style) establishes it.
I went to cafe on Fire Street with him where lots of local Shibuya kids were hanging out. The people who went to Aoyama university, Keio university or St. Mary's, etc. They had leeway and and their fashion were also relaxed.
In such a situation, I was the only person who wore Panamanian hat rolled with vintage tie which I bought at “AKAFUJI”, I was abandoned in ingenuity lots. They asked me ”Why you roll tie? What happened with you?” Now I think it became studying of the fashion just being in there.
